Metro residents march against violence

An event aimed at curbing violence will take over the streets of metro this weekend.

The event is called Stand Up Against Violence Day. It’s being organized by friends and family of Kaylin Diggs who was killed in a bar fight in August.

Hundreds are expected to take part in the anti-violence march from Sullivan’s Pond in Dartmouth to the Halifax Commons.

“This is not just for those who have died to fighting, or a shooting, or stabbing,” says Quentrel Provo, organizer and cousin of Kaylin Diggs. “It’s for those domestic violence cases that have gone wrong, those babies that have been shaken, those that have been bullied at school and committed suicide.”

Provo says the organizers turned to both the municipal and provincial levels of government for help. Provo says it wasn’t just financial aid they were looking for, but also wanted the politicians to take park.

Provo said the invites were declined.

“To say that you guys want to stop the violence and you guys want to run for office, I thought that you guys would be there to serve the people,” he says. “For you guys not to help out in any way has been really hard. It has hurt. It’s really sad and I might not vote this year. I’m saying that because they couldn’t support when we need them, why should I support you and put you in office?”

The event’s Facebook page shows over 300 people attending. It begins at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Sullivan’s Pond.
