Warm winter predicted for Maritimes

As our soggy September comes to an end, it’s starting to cool down, but Environment Canada’s three month outlook suggests it won’t get too cold.

Our meteorologist Richard Zurawski says we’ll see warmer than normal temperatures over the next several months.

“It’s calling for October, November and December to be warmer than normal in the Eastern half, from Ontario right through the Maritimes into Atlantic Canada and up to the north,” he explains.

Zurawski says, as a result, we’ll probably get more rain and freezing rain instead of snow.

“Precipitation amounts will be anywhere from normal to below normal and after this last month, I think a lot of people would like to have below normal precipitation amounts,” he jokes.

We’re heading into an El Nino, and the steady rise in winter temperatures lately has Zurawski concerned.

“I like to see sort of a zig-zag kind of thing happening where you get a good winter, then a bad winter, because I’m a big fan of stability,” he says.

It’s a different story out west where a harsher winter is being forecast.
