Fire investigators at a strip mall in north-end Halifax have handed their case to police after a fire at a pizza shop.
Fire crews were called to Pizzatown on 3045 Robie Street, between Young and Russell St. around 1:30 a.m., when a passerby saw smoke coming from the building.
“When crews arrived there was heavy smoke showing from both sides of the attic space in the building,” acting Division 2 commander Brian Fleckney told News 95.7 Tuesday. “One store was charged with smoke. Two crews entered the pizza shop and extinguished a large to medium-sized fire in the rear of the structure.”
The fire was knocked down within a few minutes, but the overhaul took another hour and a half to complete, Fleckney said.
Halifax Fire called the blaze suspicious, and called in police for the next phase of the investigation.
“Fire investigators have determined that the origin of a blaze at a Halifax business earlier this morning was suspicious and the investigation has been turned over to police,” says a release from Halifax Regional Police Cst. Pierre Bourdages.
The strip mall houses a UPS Store, Popeye’s Supplements, Money Mart, Tarek’s Cafe, Pizza Town and a Subway restaurant.
