A former Nova Scotia education minister is raising concerns about the Dexter government’s plan to train the next generation of shipbuilders.
“Know what you’re going to do before before you roll it out,” said Liberal Education Critic Karen Casey. “Don’t roll it out and then try to patch it up after.”
Casey has two major concerns as the province implements skilled trade programs into high schools.
“Let’s not introduce any more new programs until we have a qualified staff ready to pick up and go,” said Casey. “I’m anxious to know what criteria was used to hire the teachers who are teaching skilled trades now.”
Casey says she’s also concerned that there has been no discussion between the Department of Education and the school boards about ensuring all students have access to the manufacturing trades courses.
