Fall session begins; NDP pledges decorum, no snap election

The NDP House Leader is confident MLAs returning to the legislature for the fall sitting will behave. With a couple of contentious issues on the docket, such as the Lower Churchill project and boundary reviews, the Opposition says they plan to hold the Government’s feet to the fire.

Deputy Premier Frank Corbett says debate is part of the process of governance, but he hopes members will keep it professional.

“We’re going into this fall session, as we usually do, prepared to do debate in the House,” he says. “Our wish is to always keep the debate at a level that people expect us to.”

Corbett also says he believes the media fans flames as well.

As for increasing speculation that Nova Scotians will be at the polls before Christmas, Corbett says that is not the plan.

“I’ll tell you one thing, it’s not going to be this fall,” he says. “I think we don’t want our voters to have voter fatigue.”

Corbett says the provincial government realizes Nova Scotians have just come through municipal elections and the intention is not to send them to the polls again so soon.

The current government was elected on June 9th, 2009.
