Police: Bayers Lake shooting not random

It was a frightening experience for shoppers, motorists and workers at the Bayers Lake Business Park when as many as five shots were fired from one vehicle into another around closing time Wednesday night.

Halifax Regional Police said witnesses reported hearing between four and five shots fired in the 100-block of Chain Lake Drive, near Susie Lake Crescent, around 10 p.m.

“A witness had heard the shots and witnessed a vehicle leaving the area,” Staff Sgt. Reid McCoombs told News 95.7 Thursday morning. “A Buick Rendezvous fled the area going the wrong way up the road.”

The vehicle, which had been seen leaving the area, had been shot several times in the rear. Neither the driver nor the passenger was injured. Police caught up with them at a nearby residence.

Police are now looking for a small beige car, possibly a Honda, which had pulled in behind the victim’s vehicle before the shots were fired.

McCoombs said it is concerning and frightening that this happened in such a busy part of the city, at a busy time of night.

“It is [frightening] that the time the business are closing up and staff are coming and going from the businesses at that time,” said McCoombs. “I think it’s too early in the investigation to say, but it does not appear to be a random act at this time.”

Police found evidence at the scene. Today they will be canvassing for video surveillance and potential witnesses at the business park.
