Several coyote sightings in Laurie Provincial Park, near Grand Lake, have led the province to set up traps.
Natural Resources Min. Charlie Parker says they are soft traps, so that any animal that gets caught in one won’t get hurt.
Parker couldn’t say how long the traps remain in place.
“It’ll depend on whether the trapper is successful in capturing an animal or not, but normally a few weeks they will be in an area and within about five kilometres of the sightings is the radius in which the trapper is working,” said Parker.
Warning signs have been posted in the areas where the traps have been set. The signage includes a 1-800 number for those looking for more information.
Parker said the Department of Natural Resources is trying to reduce the amount of contact between potentially agressive coyotes and humans.
