Grinch returns stolen donations

Similar to the Dr. Seuss classic “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” a man has had a change of heart after snatching a charitable donation bucket from a Clayton Park store.

A donation bucket was swiped from the lobby of the Canadian Tire at 10 Radcliffe Dr. at approximately 3:30 p.m. Saturday,

Yesterday, Halifax Regional Police say the man responsible turned himself in to police.

“A man walked into the front doors of the police station. He stated he was there to turn himself in for the theft. He stated he had heard police were looking for him and that he was sorry for what he had done,” Staff Sgt. Reid McCoombs told News 95.7 Monday.

Police said they had surveillance video of the theft from the store, and the K-9 unit had also retrieved several articles of clothing during a search around the Canadian Tire following the theft.

“When we compared the person at the front door with the person in the video we were satisfied we had the right person,” said McCoombs.

There were apparently hundreds of dollars in the bucket at the time of the theft. Police said they believe all the money was returned.

A 23-year-old man will be charged with Theft and Possession under $5000. He has been released with a promise to appear in court at a later date.
