Arson Increase in 2012

The number of arson’s in Nova Scotia has prompted the Department of Natural Resources to boost it’s fire safety messaging.

Nearly a quarter of the grass and forest fires in the province last year were categorized as arson’s, that equals 85 fires.

Acting DNR Minister John MacDonnell is asking the public to educate themselves and be careful.

“We would really like for people to seriously think about their actions when it comes to burning debris, some municipalities require permits and quite often the province does initiate a burning season,” says MacDonnell.

He says part of the problem is that land owners are setting grass fires, with the hope of having greener grass for the summer.
