Two more pedestrian collisions in Metro Halifax

Halifax Regional Police are once again urging motorists to slow down and pedestrians to pay extra attention when crossing streets, after two more pedestrian collisions.

The latest happened just after 7:30 a.m. on the Bedford Highway.

A 31-year-old man was crossing the highway in a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a vehicle exiting the Sunnyside Mall parking lot.

Const. Pierre Bourdages said the collision was at low speed, but the victim was taken to the Cobequid Health Centre with minor injuries.

Police say charges under the Motor Vehicle Act are pending of failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

This morning’s accident was the second in less than 24 hours.

Wednesday at 12:20 p.m., police responded to a car/pedestrian collision in the 100-block of Herring Cove Road, between Punch Bowl Drive and Highfield Street.

Police say a 32-year-old woman crossing Herring Cove Road was hit by a southbound vehicle. She suffered minor injuries.

The pedestrian was issued a summary offence ticket for crossing a roadway outside a crosswalk zone, failing to yield to traffic.

The 27-year-old female driver was issued a summary offence ticket for driving while suspended and having no insurance.

With an apparent upward trend in pedestrian accidents recently, Bourdages said police are reviewing their education programs to remind people about crosswalk safety.

“We keep on reminding the motorists to be careful about pedestrians, but also the pedestrians to be careful when they’re crossing the road. Even though they have the right-of-way, ensure that motorists on the road see them.”

Pedestrians are reminded to make eye contact with drivers and wait until vehicles come to a complete stop before attempting to cross the road at marked crosswalks.
