Unsolved Murders

Halifax Regional Police have 52 unsolved murders on their books.

Even though some of the oldest investigations date back to the 1950’s, HRP Spokesperson Cst. Pierre Bordages says that doesn’t mean they are forgotten.

Each case file is in the hands of the integrated major crimes unit, and remain under active investigation.

Bordages says in most cases, police know, or have a good idea who the people responsible for the crime are, but are unable to gather enough evidence to have a reasonable chance of conviction when the case is brought to court.

“We do believe that most of these homicide people do know what happened, they just don’t tell us, and to secure a conviction in these cases, we need physical forensic evidence, witness information, or we need admission of guilt,” explains Bordages.

Statistics show that HRP has about a 60% success rate in solving murders in the city.

Bordages says there are no time limits on murder investigations, so police want to talk to you if you know anything about any unsolved murder in HRM.

He adds you can protect your identity by using Crimestoppers, or if need be police can offer witness protection to someone with information on a crime.
