SAINT JOHN, N.B.- A Saint John, N.B., city councillor was led away from his home in handcuffs Wednesday night after an investigation by the RCMP’s Integrated Child Exploitation Unit.
Shock and disbelief spread throughout Saint John last night upon news that Common Councillor Donnie Snook had been detained by the RCMP.
Police led Snook from his home on Martha Avenue in east Saint John shortly after 5 p.m.
Corporal Jean-Marc Pare of the child exploitation unit tells The New Brunswick Telegraph Journal that one male had been detained and no charges have been laid as of now.
He confirms the arrest was in connection to his group as part of a joint investigation with Saint John Police.
Mayor Mel Norton acknowledges that he and the Deputy Mayor were briefed late yesterday afternoon on the situation by Police Chief Bill Reid.
Past and current councillors were not willing to comment publicly on Snook’s arrest.
Meantime, members of the community expressed shock at the news.
Snook is a second-term councillor, who is heavily involved with the Inner-City Youth Ministry , which operates the Chicken Noodle Club hot lunch program.
