Blasting to begin soon at Nova Centre site

The construction of the new downtown convention centre is about to enter a new phase.

Dexter Construction has applied to HRM for a blasting permit.

HRM spokesperson Tiffany Chase tells News 95.7 there is a number of steps that have to be followed before clearance is granted.

“The contractor has to speak with neighboring property owners and business and there’s a pre-blast survey they have to conduct as part of the application process which includes examining all the structures within a defined area around the site to ensure that while the blasting is going on, there’s no damage to the structures,” she explains.

There have been some concerns raised by area business about parking.

Chase says there will be no real change to parking restrictions that are already in place around the site, with the exception of when the actual blasting would take place.

She adds traffic would likely be halted during the blast, but the disruption would last about five minutes.

The permit could be issued by the municipality as early as Monday.
