Blasting to begin Wednesday at Nova Centre

Here comes the boom!

Dexter Construction has obtained its blasting permit from the city for the new Nova Centre site, the two blocks bordered by Market Street, Prince Street, Argyle Street and Sackville Street.

Blasting operations will begin Wednesday, with one to two blasts per day for approximately seven months until excavation is complete.

There will be momentary traffic interruptions for each blast but they should last no longer than three to five minutes.

Operations can take place Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

No blasting will take place on weekends or statutory holidays.

A release from City Hall says all requirements outlined in Blasting By-law B-600 have been met in order to have a permit issued for this project.

Pre-blast inspections on structures within a pre-blast radius, as outlined in the by-law, have been carried out, and residents and business and property owners within a 300-metre radius of the construction site have been given notification of the operation by the contractor.

Seismographs will be set up on structures in the area to monitor vibration and sound levels to ensure they do not exceed allowable limits.
