Family Alzheimer’s workshops growing in popularity

Interest is growing in family Alzheimer’s workshops being offered locally as new statistics released this week indicate as many as one in three seniors now suffer from the disease or other forms of dementia.

Krista Beeler with Home Instead Senior Care in Halifax says a lot of family members are ending up as primary caregivers and need help coping.

As of 2011, Beeler says it was estimated dementia contributed to at least 444-million unpaid, family caregiver hours.

Beeler says one of the techniques the workshop teaches is memory sharing.

“So stories from younger years which are a mental stimulation piece,” explained Beeler. “There are many, many studies out there that show this really helps to keep your senior loved one functioning at a higher level a little bit longer.”

The workshops are being offered monthly, with limited availability for a session Thursday evening.
