HRSB halts some school reviews; others will proceed

The Halifax Regional School Board has pulled it’s plan to review a couple of Halifax schools, at Education Minister Ramona Jennex’s request, although other schools already up for closure in 2014 will still be on the list.

School Board Chair Gin Yee explains the board did go forward with the request to suspend future reviews.

“Two schools that were affected were Joseph Howe Elementary and Atlantic Memorial Elementary school in terrance bay.”

But he says other school closure reviews, three specifically in the eastern part of the municipality, will go ahead even though Jennex asked for them to be delayed by about a year.

“We thought that it was not in scope because we didn’t put a timeline on the school closure because the caveat that we placed on the school closure was subject to a new school.”

He says it’s frustrating knowing how much time they spent on the review process within the last couple of weeks, but he says it shows just how flawed the process is.
