For the second time this week, a young woman living in Nova Scotia has died under tragic circumstances while outside of the province.
A graduating student from Acadia University in Wolfville died Tuesday while on vacation in Cancun, Mexico.
The student’s name has not been released, but local media identifies the victim as 21-year-old Sydney Taylor.
According to media reports, it appears Taylor fell about 10 metres from the balcony of her second-floor hotel room.
They say the victim was identified by her roommate.
A spokesperson for Acadia University tells News 95.7, the incident happened while a group of students were on a private trip to the sunny destination.
Scott Roberts said few other details are available, but the family of the student has been notified.
Roberts said the remainder of the group will return to the campus later in the week and grief counsellors will be brought in to help students and staff deal with the tragedy.
Canadian consular officials are in contact with local authorities to gather more information and consular assistance is being provided both in Mexico and to the woman’s relatives in Canada.
