Water main work concludes without boil water order

The scheduled, weekend shutdown of a major Halifax Water transmission main was completed without a boil water order going into effect.

The 24-hour shutdown involved a section of the Pockwock water transmission main on Kearney Lake Road.

“We couldn’t have done this project in the time frame we had without the cooperation of the public,” said James Campbell, spokesperson for Halifax Water.

Even though the project is complete, Halifax Water was still asking residents to limit water usage until early Monday.

“We’re still trying to fully recover the system,” adds Campbell. “That basically means recharging our reservoirs and filling up the distribution system.”

If you have any discoloration of your water, Campbell says it’s still safe to drink and should be back to normal Monday.

“That’s because of the massive flow of water through the system,” adds Campbell. “It’s a lot of water mixing through the Dartmouth and Halifax sites. There could be some scouring of sediments in the pipe, it’s perfectly normal, it’s mineral base stuff, nothing anybody should be concerned about.”

The $11 million replacement project of the 1.7 km pipe will stretch into the fall, but will not affect the water supply.
