Gardening tools helping patients recover

A workshop being offered this week in Halifax will bring together health professionals interested in using gardening as a form of therapeutic recreation or treatment.

Registered Horticultural Therapist Lesley Fleming says they’re hoping to bring together people from physical therapy, to social work to oncology to talk about how to use gardening to help a range of patients.

“That could be used for people who are rehabing from some physical impairment,” said Fleming. “It’s used for people who have substance abuse challenges, geriatric populations and in pediatric hospitals.”

While Tuesday’s workshop is geared toward therapists and other health professionals, there are two sessions that are open and free to the public.

A noon session on making gardening easier, while an evening session will showcase healing gardens used by health care facilities, that will include photographs of some right here in the Halifax area.
