Man charged after unruly behaviour on Heathrow-bound flight

A Vancouver man is now facing charges in connection with the diversion of a Heathrow-bound flight from B.C. that had to be diverted to Halifax Stanfield International Tuesday morning.

Halifax RCMP say Stanislav Kalmin, 51, was remanded in custody after being released from hospital.

He’s charged with Endangering Safety of Aircraft, Assault with a Weapon and Mischief.  He also was charged under Section 7.41 of the Aeronautics Act which prohibits unruly or dangerous behaviour.

He was arrested after police received a call from the Air Canada flight around 4:18 a.m. that the plane was diverting due to a man who had become unruly on the flight, uttered threats and had failed to comply with the flight crew’s direction.

The flight landed in Halifax shortly after 5 a.m. and eventually continued on its way to London.

The Aeronautics Act suggests if convicted on indictment, Kalmin could be found liable for any costs incurred by the airline, be subject to a fine of not more than $100,000 or a jail term of not more than five years.

If he receives a less serious summary conviction, he would face a fine of not more than $25,000 or a jail term of not more than 18 months, or both.
