New transit terminal to be built behind Canada Games Centre

HRM council has voted unanimously on a new site for the Lacewood Transit Terminal.
The new bus terminal will be built behind the Canada Games Centre. The original plan was to put it on Willett Street, but the community didn’t like that, so this site was proposed.
It will be able to handle a dozen buses at once which is expected to improve local service.
Councillor Russell Walker said it’s been a long time coming.
“The parking lot between the Canada Games Centre and the soccer facility is about to be expanded and the fill from that parking lot will go into the site which will save a lot of time and money,” he explained.
Councillor Linda Mosher commented that from a safety and active transportation aspect, it’s a great set up.
“It’s by the soccer field, the baseball diamond, the library and the Canada Games Centre which gives an opportunity to open up the area more and to give a welcoming entrance to active transportation trails which can connect to other trails,” she said. “The population is here and there are many other associated uses so I think it will actually convince people to walk and then maybe we’ll get new transit users from the area, but I think it’s an excellent opportunity and I look forward to having it constructed.”
Councillor Waye Mason gave similar reasons for supporting the site.
“It’s adjacent to the Canada Games Centre, and the library and just down the hill from the high school and that makes a nice mirror to what we have in Dartmouth with the new terminal being adjacent to the Sportsplex and the Dartmouth High school,” he explained.
While the terminal will be built close to a high school and some active transportation paths, Councillor David Hendsbee noted the site does lack some pedestrian connection.
“I’m hoping they’ll try and improve that through the consultation phase to make it as connected as possible,” he said.
The next step is picking a design for the terminal and that’s a process the public will be invited to sometime this fall.
