Ecology Action Centre makes recommendations on energy affordability problems

The Ecology Action Centre released two reports Wednesday which make recommendations on long term solutions to Nova Scotia’s energy and affordability problems.

“Electricity systems are expensive, electricity infrastructure lasts a long time, the decision we’re making now are going to have broad implications 40 years from now,” said Catherine Abreu, Energy Coordinator for the Ecology Action Centre.

Among the recommendations is to make energy prices more affordable is a universal system program with a  four point plan which would target rate affordability, managing arrears, crisis intervention and having an energy efficiency program to help low income households.

“When a person is paying more than three percent of their income on their electricity bill or more than six percent if they’re heating by electricity then it’s moving into the area of being unaffordable at that point,” said Wayne MacNaughton, a member of the Affordable Energy Coalition.

About 125,000 Nova Scotians are dealing with some degree of affordability problem.
