Three fires in Saint John kill pets, destroy car

Fire in Saint John has forced nine people out of their homes.
Saint John Platoon Chief Barry Oickle says his crews were first called to 37 McLaren Boulevard at 5:47 p.m. Friday.
“First arriving crews on scene reported very heavy, thick, black smoke and fire coming out of the front floor windows,” said Oickle.
Oickle said one apartment sustained major and fire smoke damage, while another above it had minor damage. The Red Cross is helping three adults and six children who lived in the building. Firefighters took more than two and a half hours to extinguish the blaze. No humans were hurt, but four pets were lost.
Later that night, Saint John fire crews were called to a second fire at 268 Milford Road. When crews arrived on scene, they found smoke coming out of the roof of the home.
“Fire crews maintained an aggressive, interior attack,” said Oickle. “They quickly knocked down the fire and maintained it to the area of origin in the upper half of the structure.”
At the same time, other firefighters were confronting a flaming Ford Escape. Crews were called to Coronation Court at 1:26 a.m., where the car burned for 40 minutes. The court was temporarily evacuated as a safety precaution. The car was towed.
There are no reports of human injuries and all incidents are under investigation.
