Pilot dies from ultralight plane crash in Lunenburg County

Police have confirmed the pilot in the ultralight plane crash has died.

RCMP Sgt. Al LeBlanc says the crash happened near Old Barss Corner Road in New Germany at 10:15 Sunday morning.

“Our preliminary investigation revealed that the plane burst into flames after impact,” said Sgt LeBlanc. “The pilot, and lone occupant of the plane, was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.”

The 65-year-old Byron Varner was from Barss Corner.

“Our investigation is still in its early stages,” adds LeBlanc. “Few details are known at this time. We’re still trying to determine the cause of the crash.”

It’s still not clear if the pilot died on impact or shortly after.

“What I can confirm is when the call was initially received, it was for an injured man. When our crews arrived, he was pronounced dead.”

Lunenburg RCMP, New Germany fire department and EHS were called to the scene. Transportation Safety Board have been advised and will not be attending the scene.

An ultralight plane is a small, light aircraft which typically holds one occupant.
