NDP to update province’s finances today

Nova Scotia’s NDP government will release an update on the province’s finances later today.
The government tabled a budget forecasting a surplus of $16.4 million for the 2013-14 fiscal year.
Last month, the province released its audited financial statement showing it had a deficit of $302 million for the 2012-13 fiscal year, which ended March 31.
It said it would provide an updated financial forecast before it called an election.
The New Democrats are the fifth year of their mandate and must call an election by next summer but more than a quarter of a million dollars in funding announcements last week has many speculating the election will happen sooner than rather than later.
Economic and rural development minister and former finance minister Graham Steele will give the update.
He has taken over the finance duties as current Finance Minister Maureen MacDonald has taken a leave as she deals with a case of shingles.
