RCMP cracking down on rubbernecking

RCMP have begun issuing tickets to drivers snapping pictures or video as they cruise by accident scenes.

The issue came to light last week as police were investigating a minor accident on highway 102 near the airport.

RCMP Sgt. Andy Kerr says one of the officers was almost run over by a driver taking photos, which is dangerous even at slow speeds.

“At an accident scene where we have members of the public and first responders on the scene, people really have to slow down and pay extra attention,” said Kerr.

He says at the accident scene last week, officers pulled over several cars and ticketed drivers.

Kerr adds it’s a matter of safety, and police will continue to be on the lookout for distracted drivers.
