Police help students with safety

September is right around the corner and that means students of all ages will be coming back to town. It also means Halifax Regional Police is putting safety measures in place for “Operation Fall Back.”
The seven-year-old program helps educate university students about the concerns residents close to the universities have and to teach them to be responsible while partying.
HRP Constable Tracey MacDonald says the program is a proactive approach and has been successful.
“Just to let them know about noise by-laws and what will be tolerated,” said MacDonald. “And if they do land on the wrong side of the law, what charges can be expected.”
Police are also warning about the increase in both pedestrian and vehicular traffic around public schools.
“School zone laws are even in effect when kids are not in school,” added MacDonald. “If you’re by a school ground and see kids, you shouldn’t be driving faster than 35 kilometres per hour.”
Operation Fall Back runs from Sept. 1 until the end of the school year. The first day of public school in Nova Scotia is Wed, Sept. 5.
