Back to school for Nova Scotia students!

It’s the first day of a brand new school year for students across Nova Scotia.

News 95.7 spoke to a teacher and a principal who shared their advice on how what kids should expect and how to handle the back-to-school nerves.

Amy McLeod may be the principal at Ash Lee Jefferson elementary, but she said as a new principal at the Fall River school, she’s just as nervous as the kids.

“I’ve just met the staff for the first time, so it’s not knowing what to expected, the unknown, the unfamiliar, what are people going to be like?” she said. “Are they going to like me? Am I going to like them?”

She said to ease those nerves, get your kids excited for school, adding it’s normal to have butterflies but students are back with old friends and meeting new ones.

“They’re going to come home feeling positive about school and that’s our job; to make sure we pump school up and make students realize this is a positive experience for them,” explained McLeod.

Latia Williams is a grade 3 teacher at the school. She said the first day is all about getting the class ready for the year.

“Getting organized, going over different safety rules with the school and creating rules in the classroom that everyone will respect and follow to make sure we have a good community in the classroom,” she said.

Williams added parents should make sure their kids know the way to get to and from school, and should let the teacher know if they have any special needs.
