NDP to release election platform today

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia appears on the verge of an election as the governing New Democrats plan to unveil their platform today.
Premier Darrell Dexter is scheduled to speak at midday after a technical briefing on the platform at the Chocolate Lake recreation centre.
The NDP holds 31 seats in the legislature, the Liberals 12 and the Tories seven.
Two seats are vacant.
When the election is called, it will be fought on a new electoral map that cuts the number of seats in the legislature to 51 from 52.
Nova Scotia’s Liberal party, led by Stephen McNeil, is the acknowledged frontrunner if there is a fall campaign.
Jamie Baillie hasn’t led his Progressive Conservative party into a campaign before.
But the 47-year-old accountant and one-time president of a credit union is schooled in the province’s politics, having served as chief of staff to former Tory premier John Hamm a decade ago.
Dexter, a 55-year-old lawyer, made history in 2009 by leading the NDP to its first victory in Atlantic Canada.
