Nova Scotia parties campaign Thursday on student issues

Nova Scotia Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil says his party will boost research and development through new graduate scholarships.

McNeil says about 300 graduate-level students would be awarded scholarships each year in an effort to stimulate innovation at universities.

He says the scholarships would be worth between $10,000 and $15,000.

Premier Darrell Dexter says the NDP wants to make it easier for new college and university graduates to buy their first homes.

Dexter says the program involves setting mortgage terms with Housing Nova Scotia that fits a graduate’s ability to pay.

He says many of the details of the program slated for 2014 will be worked out with student organizations.

Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie says his party will adopt a tough stance when it comes to dealing with those who bully in Nova Scotia schools.

Baillie appeared at a Halifax area high school where he highlighted three pieces of legislation the Tories proposed last year.

The legislation would define bullying in law, provides penalties for offenders and empowers judges to order restrictions on use of electronic devices, if it’s deemed in the public’s interest.
