Thursday afternoon outage affected 30,000: NSP

HALIFAX – Parts of Halifax, including the city’s downtown, briefly lost power Thursday after a fault in one of two transmission lines serving the area.

The outage plunged office buildings and shopping malls throughout the city into darkness, affecting 30,000 customers on the Halifax peninsula.

Nova Scotia Power spokeswoman Neera Ritcey says the electricity went off at 2:34 p.m. for 13 minutes.

She says the other transmission line near the MacKay Bridge was out of service for maintenance and the interruption of service on the remaining transmission line happened near the shore on Lower Water Street.

Nova Scotia Power is investigating the cause of the problem.

Ritcey says the second transmission line will remain out of service for four more weeks.
