31-year-old Alexander Welch has been charged with attempted murder and assault of an officer after a police officer was stabbed in the neck and forearm Friday night.
Police say Welch is also facing charges of assault with a weapon and aggravated assault, he’s scheduled to appear in court Monday.
The officer spent the night in hospital after he was stabbed twice while trying to make the arrest. Police say the officer went to Metro Turning Point, an emergency homeless shelter on Barrington Street, at around 8:30 p.m. to arrest Welch, who was wanted on an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court.
Const. Pierre Bourdages says the man fled when he saw police, and later turned on one of the officers and stabbed him in the neck. Bourdages says the man was later Tasered by the other officer and taken into custody and a knife was recovered at the scene.
The officer is expected to make a full recovery.
