N.S. NDP pay up over caucus leaflet debacle

HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia NDP says it will pay $363 to the province’s electoral watchdog for the use of caucus leaflets after the election was called on Sept. 7.
Campaign spokesman Ron Sherrard says the party is willing to pay the money for what he says was the mistaken use of about 3,600 pamphlets and Elections Nova Scotia has agreed to accept the payment.
Under the rules governing elections, no caucus office funds are to be spent for campaign material.
Liberal candidate Andrew Younger filed a complaint with Elections Nova Scotia, alleging NDP candidates were distributing the pamphlet in violation of election rules.
Earlier in the campaign, Premier Darrell Dexter said he instructed all of his party’s candidates not to use any caucus-related material.
Elections Nova Scotia could not be reached for comment.
