Fire destroys chicken barn in Avonport

There’s nothing left of a chicken barn in the Annapolis Valley after a major fire Saturday morning.
Fire crews from Wolfville, Windsor, Hantsport and Kentville were called in to battle the fire at 10 o’clock at 92 Bluff Road in Avonport.
“It was an empty chicken barn,” explained Kirk Fredericks, fire chief of Wolfville. “There were no injuries and no chickens inside. They were bringing in straw for chickens being brought in next week. We believe the machine carrying the straw caught on fire.”
Fredericks says about 50 firefighters were called in.
“It was a massive fire,” added Fredericks. “The barn was easily 250 feet long, about 30 feet high and 50 feet wide. There’s nothing left of it.”
According to the chief, the barn belongs to Haliburton Farms. People driving down Highway 101 near Exit 9 could see the dark smoke billowing from the road.
