NDP party plans its next move

HALIFAX – Long-time NDP activists say the party is about to debate how to recover from the political ashes of an election catastrophe.
Former finance minister Graham Steele says the road back will be long and likely will involve conflicts, just as it was for the Liberals after their big loss in the late 1990s.
Retired MLA Howard Epstein says the debate will mean hearing the views of people like himself who feel the party strayed from its social democratic roots over the past four years. He says there is a major discussion brewing in the party between those who adhere to Darrell Dexter’s policies, and those who favour a move to the left.
Party president David Wallbridge says he expects an open debate in the party about the problems in the last four years, but he isn’t expecting deep divisions. He says the process will begin when the executive meets next month and sets out a post-election review process.
Wallbridge says in the past that has meant a series of regional meetings open to party members.
