It could be a slow commute home this evening.
A rainfall warning has been issued for Halifax and the South Shore that could produce thunderstorms and up to 50 millimetres of rain in some areas.
News 95.7 meterologist Richard Zurawski says the rain will start to fall early this afternoon.
“It’s a low pressure system and it’s got a tropical feel to it, so it’s one of these developing systems that could have been a tropical storm, but not quite. That having been said, it’s going to be producing significant amounts of rain,” said Zurawski.
He warns the rain will fall fast enough that it could overwhelm storm drains, leading to localized flooding and ponding on highways.
Environment Canada says rain associated with the system will begin in southwestern Nova Scotia and spread eastward this evening.
Les Suetes winds will develop overnight over the Cape Breton Highlands ahead of the trough bringing wind gusts up to 90 km/h.
