OTTAWA – Former Conservative senators Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin will each soon face motions in the Senate to suspend them without pay.
The government is putting the motion forward as the pair continue to be under RCMP investigation for improper living and travel expenses.
Both were appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and have been sitting as independents since the scandal broke last winter.
Duffy pre-empted the suspension by announcing he would be taking medical leave for ongoing heart problems.
The Senate will also renew the suspension of Sen. Patrick Brazeau, for a separate police investigation for assault and sexual assault. It ended due to the prorogation and now needs to be re-instated.
Earlier on Thursday in the House of Commons, the NDP asked the speaker to find the Prime Minister in contempt of Parliament for insisting his chief of staff acted alone when cutting a $90,000 cheque for Senator Duffy. An RCMP affidavit shows at least three others knew about the deal.
The speaker is reviewing the case before making a judgement.
