Local veterans are getting a helping hand from a group of contractors.
Veterans will be able to get repairs done to their homes, free of charge, thanks to Merit Nova Scotia, which has launched “Merit Builds” – a first of its kind program designed to help veterans who fall through the cracks and have nowhere else to turn.
Merit Nova Scotia president Michael Kydd said instead of cutting a cheque, they’re able to help veterans by using their skills.
“We have tradesmen from carpentry to electricians, to plumbing and heating specialties, to renovation experts, you name it,” he said. “We have a huge skill set that is in huge need and desperate need here in Nova Scotia.
He added those contractors will use their own time and resources.
Veterans in need will be referred to Merit by VETS Canada, an organization on the ground, working with veterans in need, and by NDP MP Peter Stoffer, which will ensure people don’t try and abuse the program.
VETS Canada CEO Jim Lowther said Merit will be able help with anything from maintenance around the home to door widening and bathroom renovations.
“A lot of older vets and disabled younger vets can’t do it; they physically can’t do it and they can’t call someone to help them because there’s no one to help,” he said.
By Christmas, Merit hopes to have completed two home renos.
