Union holds information picket outside NSP’s headquarters

Nova Scotia Power (NSP) has announced it’s looking at cutting as many as 250 jobs across the province and tension is mounting at the company.
NSP is eyeing a move towards outsourcing more work and that has the union concerned for its members.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1928, which represents the unionized workers at Nova Scotia Power, says its members are scared to death and everyone is looking over their shoulder.
The Local is holding an information picket outside the three entrances to NSP’s Lower Water Street headquarters this morning.
Assistant Business Manager Andrea McQuillin told News 95.7 the Local believes there are people there who want to know more about the union.
“We’re going to have a couple of sandwich boards outside, on public property, down at the Lower Water Street headquarters of Nova Scotia Power and we’re just going to be handing out some information leaflets to people heading in,” she explained.
The picket is designed to share information with employees who work at the site, including clerical staff in billing and customer service, as well as human resources reps and Emera and NSP managers and executives.
“Everybody at Nova Scotia Power is fearful for their job and they’re looking for a little bit more than what the labour code in Nova Scotia provides for them,” said McQuillin. “They’d like a little bit more protection if they can get it.”
She added today’s picket was scheduled even before last week’s announcement that NSP was looking to cut jobs.
“We were going to do this anyway, it just happens that it falls on a Monday after an announcement they made, it’s not for any particular reason,” she said.
The picket runs from 7:15 a.m. to noon.
