It was an emotional scene last night as hundreds of people gathered for a candle light vigil in the small town of Berwick in the Annapolis Valley.
They turned out to honour Harley Gordon Lawrence — a 62-year old homeless man who died in a suspicious fire in a bus shelter where he often slept. Lawrence was Berwick’s only homeless person — and was a fixture in the close knit community.
The vigil ceremony held outside a grocery store started with prayers. Chaplain John Andrew said Lawrence`s death should act as a reminder to Canadians of the plight of the homeless. Lawrence’s friend, 49-year old Kelly Grant, said she used to bring him food and is now struggling to cope with his loss.
Police, meantime, are investigating a report that two young men were seen hurrying towards the bus shelter with a container of gasoline just minutes before the fire began.
