Nova Scotia cracks down on problem drinking

When it comes to changing the closing time of downtown bars in HRM, it’s up to municipal politicians.
But there are steps provincial politicians can take.
The minister responsible for the NSLC Diana Whalen said she wants to start discussions around responsible advertising when it comes to alcohol.
“I think we have to look at the health of Nova Scotians,” said Whalen. “It’s not all about growth in sales or more consumption of alcohol.”
She said the province shouldn’t be encouraging irresponsible drinking.
She added she wants to ensure advertisements don’t target any vulnerable groups in the population.
Health Minister Leo Glavine said health concerns trump revenue when it comes to liberal policies.
“The health and wellness of Nova Scotia will play paramount to many of the policies our government will present over the next four years,” said Glavine.
He said he’s happy to see the issue of liquor consumption brought into the forefront.
