Dennis Oland faces second-degree murder charge in father’s death

SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Dennis Oland is facing a second degree murder charge in the death of his father.
Saint John Police Chief Bill Reid released more details around the arrest of Richard Oland’s son this morning.
Dennis, who has been the prime suspect in the two year old murder investigation, was arrested yesterday afternoon in Rothesay without incident.
Reid says while the investigation did take two years, the Saint John Police Force was not in a hurry to make a mistake.
“We had very little evidence in terms of witnesses and people guiding us. It was always process driven on the forensic side. Whether it be tech crimes, audits, DNA, we would get a little piece of evidence and it would lead us to a new area. We built the case from nothing essentially.”
Chief Reid declined to comment on a murder weapon or any potential evidence in the case but did say that Richard Oland died after “repeated blows” to his body.
Dennis Oland will face the murder change this afternoon in Saint John provincial court.
