Dennis Oland makes court appearance on murder charge

The son of slain businessman Richard Oland appeared in court Wednesday to face a charge of second-degree murder in the death of his father.

Dressed in a sweatshirt over a plaid shirt, Oland, 45, smiled at members of his family as he arrived in provincial court.

Oland was remanded by Judge Marco Cloutier until his next court appearance on Tuesday, when a date will be set for a preliminary inquiry.

Saint John police chief Bill Reid said Dennis Oland was arrested in the Rothesay area Tuesday without incident.

Reid revealed at a news conference that the Crown gave approval for the charge to be laid roughly three weeks ago after giving his officers more direction a year ago on what needed to be done to make an arrest.

Richard Oland’s body was discovered in his Saint John office on July 7, 2011.

The 69-year-old was a member of the family that owns Moosehead Breweries Ltd., but left the company in the 1980s.

Dennis Oland was first identified as a suspect in the case in court documents released in May and a sworn police affidavit was released last month that says blood on a sports jacket found in his Rothesay home matched the DNA profile of his father.

The documents contain claims not proven in court.
