Shoddy condo construction cause for concern

A warning flag is being raised for those looking to buy new condos in Nova Scotia.
The Condominium Owners of Nova Scotia are asking the province to change some of the rules governing the inspection of new units and to require builders to offer a warranty on new construction.
“In condo construction it’s left up to the builders or the developer to ensure that they build their building to specifications,” said Lorne Verabioff of the group. “A single family home, when it is being constructed, there are at least 5 or 6 independent inspections during various stages of construction.”
CONA is also advocating for a mandatory five year warranty on all new construction for water penetration to ensure that new owners don’t end up having to pay for fixing leaks.
Verabioff says the problem has been around for over 20 years, but with all of the new units being built over the last few years the problems have been moved to the forefront.
Verabioff says the reforms are designed to protect buyers from millions of dollars in repair bills once they buy and move into a new condo unit.
