Government documents show the former NDP government made changes to severance packages after they were defeated.
Documents obtained by the Liberals show the former NDP cabinet bumped up severance packages for former employees by $250,000
Economic Development Minister Michel Samson said this decision was made out of bounds
He said the former NDP cabinet shouldn’t have been making these decisions after losing the election.
“Following the election defeat, the NDP broke a convention that exists in our democratic system,” said Samson, “While it may not be a legal convention, it is a moral and public convention and they have breached.”
Opposition leader Jamie Baillie said he will ask the NDP to pay for the increase out of its own pocket.
“Today I am calling on the NDP party to pay the difference, the top up, that they are using our taxpayers dollars for,” said Baillie
Interim NDP leader Maureen MacDonald said severance packages like these are standard when a government changes hands.
