Victims of Halifax Explosion remembered

About 150 people gathered atop Fort Needham Park to mark the 96th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion.
It was on this day in 1917 a ship carrying explosives exploded in the harbour.
Historian Marilyn Gurney said the day started like any other.
“In reality nothing was right with the day and spirits would sink to an all time low,” said Gurney.
She explained about 2000 people were killed during the catastrphic explosion that morning.
Alexa McDonough explains her granddfather was helping to set up Truro’s first hospital but thought the medical equipment would be better served in Halifax in the wake of the disaster.
“He had two box cars full of hospital equipment and medical supplies and brought them to the outskirts of Halifax because they couldn’t get any closer than Bedford,” said McDunnaugh
In attendance of the memorial was the Premier, the Mayor and Lieutenant Governor JJ Grant, as well as one of the last known survivors.
