Canada Post choosing cuts over better options: Union

SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The National Director of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers in the Atlantic region feels Canada Post had better options to aide the money-hemorrhaging corporation, instead of the cuts it is planning to implement.

The postal service announced yesterday that door-to-door mail delivery in urban areas will be phased out over the next five years.

But Jeff Callaghan told the Todd Veinotte Show, while there is a large amount of Canadians who currently receive their mail at community mail boxes, one third of Canadians still enjoy door to door service.

“That includes regular Canadians, seniors, Canadians with different abilities and home businesses.  Asking people to leave their businesses to go collect their mail is not progressive in our opinion,” said Callaghan.

It is estimated that the changes will eliminate 6,000 to 8,000 jobs positions, mainly through attrition.

The service cut is part of a plan that Canada Post believes will save the company up to $900-million a year.
