Ice not thick enough to skate: Red Cross

The Red Cross is reminding people that the ice on lakes and ponds isn’t thick enough, despite the cold weather.

Tony Rodgers is the spokesperson for the Halifax Regional Search and Rescue. He tells News 95.7 there’s not many ice related accidents, but from time to time people testing the ice do fall through.

“Parents should remind their kids that the ice is not safe,” he said, “Wait until the city crews start drilling and testing the thickness before they attempt it.”

Rodgers said if you do fall through the ice to not panic because it only makes things worse.

The ice must be between 6 and 8 inches thick before you skate or walk on it, advises Rodgers.

If you’re looking to start skating before a pond or lake reaches the right thickness, the Emera Oval in Halifax opens Sunday December 15th at 10:30, weather permitting.

The city of Halifax has an ice thickness line which is 902-490-3577. They also have a website with what bodies of water are ready to skate on and the Red Cross has lots of information on ice thickness as well.
