Former Blackberry workers say it’s tough finding work

HALIFAX, N.B. – For some former BlackBerry employees in Nova Scotia, the road back to finding work is proving to be a tough one.

Misty and Matthew Legge say they had hopes when they packed their bags six years ago and left St. John’s, Newfoundland, for jobs at the BlackBerry office in Halifax.

Now the young couple say it’s hard to find comparable work in the city.

The BlackBerry dream ended in Halifax on October 10, when the company announced it would close its office, resulting in 350 layoffs.

Matthew says the city is now teeming with former employees of BlackBerry and other firms that recently laid off staff.

Johnathan Rhynold, 26, is also a former software support specialist and says he’s worried about having to sell his house in the New Year.

BlackBerry spokeswoman Rebecca Freiburger says some social media websites show former BlackBerry employees are finding work.

She says the Waterloo, Ontario-based firm is doing what it can, when it can, to assist.
