Transport Canada monitoring container ship with hull problems off Newfoundland

PORTUGAL COVE SOUTH, N.L. -Transport Canada is working with the captain of the container ship to ensure the safety of the crew and prevent possible pollution.

The joint rescue co-ordination centre in Halifax said four people were rescued from the ship yesterday about 60 kilometres south of Portugal Cove South.

Spokesman Major Martell Thompson said the ship is at anchor with a Canadian Coast Guard vessel standing by.

Thompson said the centre received a call late Sunday morning that the vessel was having issues with its hull.

Four non-essential crew members were hoisted into a helicopter and taken to Portugal Cove South, while about 20 others remain on the ship working to resolve the issue.
